Different Types of Manga

This weeks Manga Monday moves into a new category than what has previously been posted. We are talking about the different types of Manga.

Here is a list below:

Dōjinshi or Doujinshi

Dōjinshi (Doujinshi) is an unofficial manga that is fan made story lines of an original series, or an independently produced (self-published) manga. Dōjinshi (Doujinshi) basically translates “fan-work” (literally “same-person-writing”)

Gekiga

Gekiga is a more serious form of manga, often adopted by Japanese Cartoonist who did not want their trade to be know as Manga. Gekiga translates to “dramatic pictures”.

Hentai

Hentai is sexually hardcore manga. Hentai is Japanese for “perverted” or “perversion”. (adult content)

Josei

Josei is manga aimed at adult women.

Seinen

Seinen is manga aimed at adult mean.

Shōujo 

Shōujo is manga aimed to young females up to the age 18. These stories tend to focus more on romance and relationships from a young female’s point of view.

Shōnen

Shōnen is a manga aimed more to males up to age 18; it is mostly action, sports or romance.

Kodomo

Kodomo manga is for younger children that are just learning to read.

Shōujo-ai / Yuri

Shōujo-ai / Yuri manga is based on female/female romantic relationships.

Shōnen-ai / Yaoi

Shōnen-ai / Yaoi manga is based on male/male romantic relationships.
